This site promotes "face reading" in all types of settings. There are real world applications and even testimonials. I will let the reader decide what they think of all this. There is a nice selection of vidoes and short texts. The site even fesses up to some of the discrimination used in "face reading", but still stands by its practice. It does go more in depth about its practices, so I at least found that part interesting.

I found this site interesting. The concept of being able to read people's faces, just the slightest hint of emotion is incredible. If anyone is interested there is a new show on TV called Lie to Me on Fox, it is about this man who runs a private firm that investigates allegations using face reading. The show and this website caught my attention because it seems to me that a three hour seminar is not nearly long enough to teach someone the intricacies of seeing a slight hint of emotion.
ReplyDeleteThe idea that no one is capable of lying completely is cool. Even when we don't want to our honesty shows through our faces. The slightest twitch of the mouth can show anger. However, I think that I would feel so strange if I was capable of reading faces. I would be afraid that the people I hold closest to me would eventually disappoint me and lie to me. I would never be able to trust anyone and frankly I do not want to know when people are lying to me that would be heartbreaking.
Paul Ekman, who is a respected researcher in emotion has a site that offers training in reading faces.

If you were to go anywhere, I would suggest this site, but many of his colleagues are appalled that he would "sell out" like this. There is very little evidence that faces reliably can reveal lying, including Ekman's research.
Wow. So I checked out Paul Ekman's site and it looks like a Hollywood Movie Promo! I feel as if I've entered into the world of infomercials and the like.
ReplyDeleteOne line that keeps popping up is "Learn how to read micro expressions in less than one hour!" REALLY? If you scroll down a little bit, it continues... with as little as 40 minutes of training, you can improve (key words, *can improve*) your ability to recognize emotions by being able to detect micro expressions.
However, most people cannot recognize micro expressions because they last only 1/25 of a second.
Overall, I have my doubts. If it was that easy to read people's emotions our society would be much better at understanding one another. If all I had to do was take a one hour course, I should never have problems with communicating again. I really wish it was that easy. Sadly, nothing in life is.
